Adrenocorticotropic Hormone

Adrenocorticotropic hormone is a polypeptide tropic hormone synthesised by the anterior pituitary gland. It is produced in response to corticotrophin-releasing hormone from the hypothalamus, with the immediate function of releasing cortisol from the adrenals. In clinical diagnostics it is most commonly used to assess the function of the adrenal glands. It is utilized in the diagnosis of Addison’s disease and Cushing’s disease.
