Alpha 1-Antitrypsin is a protease inhibitor, with the role of protecting tissues from enzymes of inflammatory cells, especially neutrophil elastase. It is expressed in the liver and has a molecular weight of 52 kDa. In disease Alpha 1-antitrypsin deficiency is a hereditary disorder in which a deficiency of A1AT leads to a chronic uninhibited tissue breakdown, specifically effecting the lung tissue. It eventually leads to characteristic manifestations of pulmonary emphysema.
