Apolipoprotein E is synthesised in the liver as part of Very Low Density Lipoprotein (VLDL). Its role within the body is to transport triglycerides to the liver tissue. It is also incorporated into High Density Lipoprotein (as HDL-E) and functions in cholesterol distribution among cells. Within clinical diagnostics, APO E has been associated with cardiovascular disease due to its involvement in plasma lipids. It has also been associated to neurological conditions such as Alzheimer’s disease.
