Carcinoembryonic Antigen is a fetal protein found in the liver, intestine and pancreas and levels fall following birth. Raised levels are seen in patients with cancer of the digestive tract or certain non-malignant conditions especially; hepatitis, cirrhosis, pancreatitis and Crohn’s disease. Smokers also have raised levels.
