Ceruloplasmin is a copper containing protein which normally binds 90% of the copper present in plasma. It is not a copper transport protein but mirrors changes in serum levels. Raised serum levels are found in pregnancy, women taking contraceptives, acute infection and in cases of malignancy. Reduced levels are characteristic of Wilsons Disease and also found in malnutrition.
