Glycosylated hemoglobin (HbA1c) levels are used as an indicator of blood glucose in diabetic patients. It is formed by the conjugation of a hexose sugar to the beta-chain of hemoglobin A1C. HbA1C builds up in red blood cells throughout the lifetime of diabetic patients and its levels therefore represent a record of blood glucose levels over the previous 8 weeks or so. The subunit has a molecular weight of 18kDa.
