Myeloperoxidase is an abundant leukocyte enzyme which is raised in plasma in inflammatory and cardiac conditions. Raised levels are a predictive marker for myocardial infarction, and it appears to be more reliable as a predictor than Troponin, CRP or CKMB levels. Myeloperoxidase antibodies are autoimmune antibodies which are measured as a sub-component of the ANCA screen used in the diagnosis of vasculitis. MPO antibodies are found particularly in glomerulonephritis.
