Osteopontin is a highly negatively charged, extracellular matrix protein that lacks an extensive secondary structure. It is synthesised by a variety of tissue types including fibroblasts preosteoblasts, osteoblasts, osteocytes, odontoblasts and some bone marrow cells. Osteopontin C has been found to be elevated in cancer patients.
