Prolactin is a peptide hormone of molecular weight 27.5 kDa and pI 6.5. It is secreted by the pituitary according to a circadian rhythm. It induces and maintains lactation but it is also important in fertility by direct action on the ovaries or testicles. High levels are seen during pregnancy and in patients with pituitary tumors and chronic renal failure.
