Tuberculosis has become a global public health problem and there is an urgent need for more effective control measures. Although people with TB do produce the immune response needed to destroy the mycobacterium, the disease continues to progress. This is due to the presence of a second immune response that undermines the effect of the first one. Multi-drug resistance is also a major factor in the spread of infection and hence the separate antigenic components are needed in research to fight the disease.
